Sir Benegal Narsing Rau (Advisor to the Constituent Assembly) is popularly known for preparing the first draft of the Constitution of India and giving it the structure it has today. However, his contribution runs deeper, and extends beyond the making of the Constitution, to preparing the defence for the Azad Hind Fauj at INA Trials, representing India at the United Nations and International Court of Justice, amongst many others. Charkha, the Constitutional Law Centre, at the Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy is instituting the Annual B.N. Rau Memorial Lecture, in his memory.
This lecture is part of Charkha’s initiative of taking the Constitution to the very people it’s written for in their own languages. Hence, every year it shall be delivered in an Indian language, starting from Hindi in 2026.
