Vidhi Tamil Nadu was established in 2024 to address legal reform at the state level in Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu is a highly industrialised state, with the most number of factories in India and the largest share of workers in factories. The state accounts for over 40% of the women factory workforce in India. Tamil Nadu has also pioneered several welfare initiatives. The state is a top performer in terms of Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) at the higher education level, and is known for its public health delivery system and progressive transgender policies. Keeping in mind Tamil Nadu’s focus on both economic development and social welfare, it is essential to craft robust legal frameworks that strengthen the rule of law in Tamil Nadu, creating a legal ecosystem that supports Tamil Nadu’s diverse goals through targeted legal interventions.
Vidhi Tamil Nadu will engage with the Tamil Nadu government to enhance law drafting capacity, support policy-making with sound legal advice, and draft primary legislation, rules, and regulations in relevant areas of reform. We seek to shape the future of Tamil Nadu’s legal landscape through practical and effective legal reform tailored to Tamil Nadu’s context through a consultative process, engaging with key stakeholders from the bureaucracy, judicial system, civil society, and academia. We hope to curate and design policy solutions that are rooted in law, actionable and easy to administer.
Given Tamil Nadu’s unique position as a model state, our legal reform initiatives in the state could also inform Vidhi’s engagements in other states looking to implement similar legal reforms. Our aim, as always, remains better laws through better governance.
