Can Indian states make their laws more LGBTIA+ inclusive? The answer is YES.

In its landmark marriage equality judgment, Supriyo v. Union of India, the Supreme Court of India affirmed that State Legislatures and State Governments have the power to enact LGBTIA+ inclusive laws and government measures.

“Queering the Law: Making Tamil Nadu’s Laws LGBTIA+ Inclusive” is the first comprehensive report to map Tamil Nadu’s legal landscape and identify practical pathways for making state laws and government action more LGBTIA+ inclusive.

Available in Tamil ‘தமிழ்நாட்டின் சட்டங்களை LGBTIA+ சமூகத்தினரை உள்ளடக்கியதாக மாற்றுதல்’ and English, the report examines eight critical areas: Gender Identity and Expression, Relationships, Healthcare, Education, Employment and Welfare, Minor Rights, Violence, and Monitoring and Enforcement.

While this report focuses on Tamil Nadu’s legal landscape, it also serves as an illustration of how states in India can make their laws queer inclusive.
