Maharashtra is the second most populated state in the country and the largest contributor to the country’s GDP. Keeping in mind Maharashtra’s important position, the need for a conversation on legal reform in the State is imperative. In 2020, Vidhi expanded its work and opened an office in Mumbai to address legal reform in Maharashtra. The COVID-19 pandemic has underlined the key role of the State Government in India’s constitutional set up. With this vision, as its first initiative, Vidhi Maharashtra is launching a Briefing Book on Fifteen Suggested Legal Reforms for Maharashtra.

The Briefing Book is a list of recommended reforms for the State of Maharashtra. In 2021, we focus on the core areas that were affected by the onset of COVID-19. The pandemic has taught us the importance of our community and systems and how they might be enhanced to deal with similar situations in the future. The suggested reforms thus focus on how we as a community can learn from the pandemic and strengthen systems for the citizens of Maharashtra.

Dr. Vijay Kelkar, Former Finance Secretary and Chairman, Thirteenth Finance Commission, will launch our Briefing Book.

This will be followed by a panel discussion on legal reforms to build a modern Maharashtra.

Panellists:

  • Hon’ble Mr. Justice G.S. Patel, Judge, Bombay High Court
  • Mr. Ajoy Mehta, Former Chief Secretary, Government of Maharashtra
  • Dr. Anand Bang, Joint Director, SEARCH, Gadchiroli
  • Dr. Rahela Khorakiwala, Lead, Vidhi Maharashtra

The discussion will be moderated by Mr. Rajdeep Sardesai, TV Anchor and Journalist.

Vidhi Maharashtra’s Briefing Book Launch and Panel Discussion will be held on Tuesday, 29 June 2021 at 5.30 pm.
