Maharashtra Moving Forward: Fifteen Legal Reforms for the State

As 2023 marks the halfway point in the implementation of the sustainable development goals set by the United Nations, Vidhi Maharashtra’s Briefing Book focuses on three categories of reforms: (a) reforms promoting sustainability; (b) reforms promoting inclusivity; and (c) reforms which would strengthen institutions and promote the rule of law.

Description:

The Maharashtra Government is one among the many states currently aiming to be a “one trillion dollar economy”. In the last few years, Maharashtra has also witnessed several infrastructure projects sought to improve trade, industry and transportation. An emphasis on infrastructure and economic growth is crucial to reduce poverty, create employment, and improve the overall standard of living of citizens. However, rapid development often exacts a toll on our natural and built environments.

In 2015, the United Nations embraced the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also referred to as the Global Goals, with the intention of providing a comprehensive framework to combat poverty, preserve the environment, and promote peace and prosperity for all individuals by 2030.
