About the Book

Becoming Allies explores social movements by focusing on individuals who support causes without being directly impacted by the injustices involved. Using interviews with civil liberties activists and private records, the book charts the development of allyship politics in India. It looks at the histories of groups like the People’s Union for Civil Liberties and the People’s Union for Democratic Rights, formed during the Naxalite Movement and the Emergency. The book also discusses the ethics, dilemmas, and strategies involved in supporting others in their struggles and the role of civil liberties groups in amplifying marginalised demands and challenging dominant narratives.

About the Author

Ankita Pandey is an Associate Professor of Political Science at the O. P. Jindal Global University, and a Research Associate at the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies at the University of Oxford.
