Criminal Procedure on the Ground: Law, Practice and Reality

Tuesday, 5 May 2026, 5:00 pm - Tuesday, 5 May 2026, 7:30 pm
Poster for a launch event and panel discussion titled “Criminal Procedure on the Ground: Law, Practice and Reality,” featuring speakers Rebecca John (Senior Advocate, Delhi High Court), Justice Gita Mittal (former Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir & Ladakh and Delhi High Court), and Bharat Chugh (former judge and advocate). Hosted by Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy, the event is scheduled for May 5, 2026, from 6:00–7:30 pm at India International Centre, New Delhi, with high tea served.

India’s criminal justice system underwent a significant transition with the coming into force of the new criminal laws, including the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). While these reforms promised to decolonise the criminal justice system, modernise procedure and improve efficiency, an important question remains—how are these changes unfolding in practice?

The Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy’s report, Procedure in Practice, examines the implementation of the BNSS on the ground through insights from police officers and judges, offering a closer look at how criminal procedure is actually functioning on-ground.

Join us on Tuesday, 5th May 2026, at the India International Centre, New Delhi, for the release of the report and a panel discussion on “Criminal Procedure on the Ground: Law, Practice and Reality”, featuring:
