Crime and Punishment Summit

The Criminal Justice team at the Vidhi has been working to reimagine crime & punishment for the 21st century. To this end, we have developed a collective and based on the insightful feedback received during these conversations, we are thrilled to organise the Crime & Punishment Summit 2024. The Summit aims to foster an environment of shared learning, and innovation, and to provide a platform for diverse stakeholders to collectively ideate actionable solutions to drive meaningful change in the field of criminal justice. The event will be held at the Speaker Hall, Constitution Club of India on 26th July 2024.

The event will have two panel discussions, followed by the inaugural annual lecture on Crime and Punishment.

  • Panel 1 (03:00 to 04:00 PM)- Insights from the Ground: Prisons, Policing, and Access to Justice in India with Ms. Audrey D’Mello, Director, MAJLIS; Ms. Madhurima Dhanuka, Programme Head, Prisons Reform Programme, Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative; Prof. (Dr.) Vijay Raghavan, Professor, Centre for Criminology and Justice, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mr. Sharath Chandran, Advocate, Madras High Court, and Dr. Upneet Lalli, Deputy Director, Institute of Correctional Administration
  • Panel 2 (04:00 to 05:00 PM) – Reforming India’s Criminal Justice System: Towards a Progressive 21st Century Framework with Honourable Justice PN Prakash, Retired Judge, Madras High Court; Prof. (Dr.) G.S. Bajpai, Vice-Chancellor, National Law University, Delhi; Mr. Somesh Goyal, Former Deputy-General of Police, Himachal Pradesh Police, and Ms. Seema Joshi, Criminal Justice Expert, UNODC – Regional Office for South Asia

The panel discussions will be followed by Vidhi’s Inaugural lecture on Crime and Punishment titled ‘Are our criminal laws consistent with our constitutional values?’ delivered by Mr. Kapil Sibal, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India.
