On February 26, 2016, Vidhi organised its eighth talk in the ‘Great Cases’ series. Ms. Rebecca John, Senior Advocate, spoke on the Hashimpura Massacre case (State of Uttar Pradesh v. Surender Pal Singh and Others). Ms. John reflected on the judgment delivered by the Tis Hazari trial court. The case and the judgment raised compelling questions about the criminal justice system. She also discussed her experience of having represented the victims and survivors. The trial court in its judgment acquitted 16 Provincial Armed Constabulary personnel accused of the murder of 42 Muslims in Hashimpura in 1987 for the lack of evidence.
