Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy and the Asian Studies Centre, St Antony’s College, University of Oxford, has launched a series of five panel discussions with leading academics titled, ‘Understanding Kashmir and The Nullification of article 370: Law, History and Politics’. The second panel on ‘Institutionalising Violence’ took place on 9th November 2021.

Perhaps the greatest stereotype about Kashmir is the one that contrasts this region’s natural beauty with the immense human cost of its violence. How are we to understand this violence more deeply than by holding the state or some other agency responsible for it? Will grasping both its institutional and existential character permit us to think about the political meaning and limits of such violence?

SPEAKERS FOR PANEL 2:

  • MOHAMAD JUNAID, Assistant Professor, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts
  • RADHIKA GUPTA, Assistant Professor, Leiden University
  • CABEIRI de BERGH ROBINSON, Associate Professor, University of Washington

The discussion was moderated by Professor Faisal Devji, Professor of Indian History & Director of the Asian Studies Centre, University of Oxford.
