Internship: Legal Text Simplification Project

About the Project

Laws are difficult to access and understand due to a lack of awareness about their existence, lack of actionable information about their operation, complexity of the court process, and the high cost of engaging with the legal system. Amongst these, the first barrier comes up in trying to find accurate legal information, which is written in a simple and accessible manner. Do you want to explore how the use of technology can solve this problem? Join us!

Multimodal Digital Media Analysis Lab (MIDAS), at Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology Delhi (IIIT-D) is working on creating an AI powered tool which seeks to automate the process of legal text simplification, helping to ensure that legal information is accessible to everyone. About Nyaaya

Nyaaya is an open access, digital resource that provides simple, actionable, recallable and authoritative legal (SARAL) information to young Indians, helping them solve day-to-day legal problems so that they are aware of their rights and feel empowered to seek justice. Nyaaya was conceived by Rohini Nilekani and incubated at the Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy.

We provide information on law as experienced by citizens and as it applies to the geographical location in real-time rather than the law in the limited form of the abstract text of legislations and judgments. This information is available on a free, online platform in the form of explainers and guides, answers to frequently asked questions and glossary terms in written, audio, and video formats and in different languages. The platform also has an Ask Nyaaya section where people submit legal queries.
